How depression affects your perception?

by Abigail Johnson Akingbade on May 21, 2012

Depressive perceptionPerception is how you see yourself and relate to others. Perception determines how you live your life. It is the ability to see, hear, or become aware of something through the senses. It is how you understand your surroundings.

How you view the world affects your state of being. If you see others as liars and thieves then you may become distrusting and lack the ability to deeply connect with others.

Perception affects your mental well-being. You lack connection because you perceive others to be untrustworthy. And you become depressed because of the distance you create when dealing with others.

Your perception is not always wrong or not without warrant. This isn’t a post to say things are not as they seem because your perceptions enable you to exist within the world and deal with others. This post is to help you think about how you see yourself and others.

Do you feel like a failure? Can you see yourself being happy or is that not possible for you?

Depression distorts your perception. You must ask yourself why do you feel like your life can’t improve. And deeply know that whatever you are feeling right now is temporary and not truly who you are ultimately going to become.

Perception is neither right nor wrong because it is how you feel which is the result of experiences, dogmas, and many other factors that affect what you learn and accept about yourself. You have a choice in how you perceive your environment. Refuse to let depression keep you from seeing what’s helpful or a lesson to be learned from everything you go through in life.

Do you take things personally? Can you accept everyone is operating from their current awareness and you don’t have to accept negative beliefs?

Choose wisely what you pay attention to because negative beliefs can destroy your self-esteem and make you feel unworthy of thriving. Selectively choose what to accept and what to dismiss because harmful ideas subconsciously deteriorate your zeal for life and keep you from reaching your full potential.

It’s a terrible thought to think so many die every day having never fully reached their potential because of harmful ideas that kept them idle and living in fear. Remember your state of being is a direct reflection of experiences, dogmas, and many other factors that you have learned and accepted about yourself and the world.

Do you think others are out to harm you or help you? Is the universe a friendly or harsh place? Does evil outweigh the good?

You never know how much mental clutter you have in your mind until you start to ask yourself deep questions about how you view yourself and the world. It is the beginnings to your happiness and release of fear that keeps you depressed. Feed your mind with information that is going to build you up.

Do the things you listen to constantly keep you in fear and wary of others? You have a choose to stop listening to it, because you want to better your mental health which is only done through you taking necessary steps for your health.  When you take care of yourself only then can you truly serve others.

Build up a healthy perception. Beat your depression with a new attitude.

Please start to ask yourself daily:

How is listening to this person helping you grow?
Is this information promoting love or hate?
What is your deepest fears? Why?
